Brazil's National Institute of Industrial Property yesterday denied Apple's (AAPL) request to register the iPhone trademark in the country, as electronics maker IGB Eletronica already owns the rights to the name. Apple won't have to immediately suspend iPhone sales, but it faces a potentially lengthy and costly legal battle in what has become a fast-growing market.
Apple (AAPL) is rumored to be planning a €4/share bid for Germany's Loewe (LOEEF.OB), sending shares in the consumer-electronics supplier 16.1% higher to €3.17 in Frankfurt and giving it a market cap of €40.07M. Loewe says it's not aware of any bids.
Google (GOOG) paid Apple (AAPL) $701M in traffic acquisition costs last year in exchange for being the default search engine on iOS, estimates Morgan Stanley's Scott Devitt. Moreover, he sees that figure rising to $877M this year and $1.1B in 2014. With Microsoft (MSFT) reportedly raising its offer for making Bing the default iOS engine, Devitt believes Google is now providing Apple with a 75% revenue cut. Consider that more evidence of Android's importance to Google's future.
In all the speculation that preceded Microsoft’s recent release of Office 2013, one of the most hotly debated rumors was that Microsoft would be announcing a version of Office for the iPad. Even with the debut of Microsoft’s Surface tablet, analysts said Microsoft couldn’t possibly afford to ignore the massive iOS user base.
They were wrong.
When asked point blank by Bloomberg Businessweek, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave a terse answer to the question of when we can expect an iPad version for Office: “I have nothing to say on that topic. … We do have a way for people always to get to Office through the browser, which is very important.”
Clearly, Steve Ballmer has never tried taking his own advice. While InfoWorld notes that the cloud-based version of Microsoft Office is somewhat improved, it’s still not a really workable solution for iPad users.
The most obvious limitation of Ballmer’s workaround is the lack of off-line access. If you need to work on one of your documents while you’re without Internet access, well, tough.
And if you want to print, well, there’s a “workaround” for that, too. You’ll have to basically “print” your document to a PDF and then print the PDF.
(Meanwhile, Android users like me are just plain out of luck on all counts, since the web apps are basically unusable on the Chrome browser.)
All in all, it looks like Microsoft Office may be going the way of the dinosaur. By going all protectionist on non-Surface tablet users, Microsoft has tied itself to the shrinking PC market and is headed for irrelevance.
Users who need a better workaround than the one Steve Ballmer has offered would be wise to check out better products offered by other companies, including the popular (and still free) CloudOn app .
Egyre többet cikkeznek egy esetleges Apple óráról:
In its headquarters in Cupertino, Apple (AAPL) is experimenting with wristwatch-like devices made of curved glass, according to people familiar with the company's explorations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not allowed to publicly discuss unreleased products. Serious reports about the imminent arrival of an Apple iWatch, a potential game-changer in the realm of wearable computing, are doing the rounds since yesterday.
Apple's stock, which has been languishing despite Apple's stellar fourth quarter financial performance, is expected to bounce back on the news. Investors would most likely embrace an iWatch, with some already saying that wearable computing could replace the smartphone over the next decade.
Apple's iWatch: A Potential Game-Changer?
Apple is experimenting with designs for its smartwatch that would perform some functions of a smartphone. The company has discussed such a device with its major manufacturing partner Hon Hai Precision Industry Company, better known as Foxconn.
"Such a watch would operate on Apple's iOS platform, two people said, and stand apart from competitors based on the company's understanding of how such glass can curve around the human body," The New York Times reports.
Why Investors Should Care
If smartphones do become smartwatches and smartglasses, Apple seems to have the technology to make standout wearable computers.
Apple's technology could progress to a point where consumers have a tablet plus wearable computers, like watches or glasses, which enable simple things like voice calls, texting, quick searches, and navigation.
These devices are likely to be cheaper than an iPhone and could ultimately be Apple's best answer to addressing emerging markets.
Benefits of an Apple iWatch
There have been numerous iWatch concepts that have surfaced in the past. Apple itself released an iPod nano that functioned as a watch; however, despite its popularity among many it was replaced by a larger iPod nano last year. Here's some of the benefits of an Apple iWatch that Business Insider has summarized:
● Apple can solve the "having-to-remove-the-watch-from-your-arm-problem" by implementing wireless charging, which the company holds a patent for.
● Apple's patent for curved glass screens could help reduce the clunky factor.
● Siri will be able to handle complex tasks reducing the need for buttons or complicated menus.
● You could see who is called without needing to take out your iPhone.
● It could eliminate the need for typing in passwords on Apple devices.
● You may never lose your iPhone again because the iWatch will alert you if you start moving out of range.
● An iWatch could function as a fitness tracker using sensors to determine calories burned, miles traveled, and blood pressure.
● You could swipe an iWatch to make payments using NFC or other technologies.
● It would be great for music listening.
● The iWatch would work great as a remote control via Siri.
● Apple could use the iWatch to fix its maps by using crowdsourced pressure data.
Technical Picture: An Uptrend Imminent?
If Apple's stock could breach the 20-Day SMA at $472.55 on a closing basis, which is highly probable right now on the iWatch news, a short-term uptrend will be confirmed. A close above the 50-Day SMA, which is currently located near $510, will confirm that the uptrend is something more than just a short-term blip. The stock last traded above its 20-Day and 50-Day SMAs in the first week of October, last year when the downtrend started. I feel the stock will be in a steady uptrend very soon.
Nu sag schon, az Applefa sem nő az égig...
hogy mik vannak? :)
BlackBerry (BBRY) loses another big enterprise customer as Home Depot is reportedly switching to Apple's (AAPL) iOS for all store managers and corporate-level employees. The move will have the company swapping out about 10K Blackberrys for iPhones. At this point the approximately 60K Motorola phones used by floor employees will not be affected.
"A mobilipar nyereségének 103 százaléka két cégé
