Consumers are deeply concerned about their situation and especially the weak labour market, which still sheds workers on net (20,000 lost payrolls in Januar), causes despair. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index fell to 46 in February from 56.5 in January. This is the lowest reading since April 2009 and signals that the ongoing recovery, as signaled by healthy Q4 GDP growth of 5.7%, still has an important absentee - the consumer.
