Microsoft leads tech stocks higher(10:00 am ET)

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Tech stocks rose modestly on Wednesday morning, led by a strong gain at Microsoft Corp. (MSFT: news, chart, profile) . The software giant's shares were up more than 2.7% to $37.65 in early trades. Reuters reported late Tuesday that the company has narrowed down its "shortlist" for CEO candidates, which reportedly include Ford (F: news, chart, profile) chief Alan Mulally and former Nokia (NOK: news, chart, profile) CEO Stephen Elop. Former Skype CEO Tony Bates is also reportedly on the list of candidates. Also, Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund raised his price target on the stock, citing the potential for a new leader and reorganization "potentially extracting a lot more value out of the current assets." Qualcomm (QCOM: news, chart, profile) shares edged higher in early trades ahead of the company's fourth fiscal quarter report, due after the close. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP: news, chart, profile) rose 0.3% to 3,953.
