SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- American Eagle Outfitters AEO -0.40% shares tumbled 16% in after-hours trading Monday after the teen apparel retailer said it was cutting its outlook for the second quarter to 10 cents a share from prior guidance of 19-21 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected 21 cents a share. The company blamed weaker-than-expected sales and margins. Total net revenue fell 2% in the second quarter, while same-store sales, including AEO direct, fell 7% vs. an 8% increase last year, the company said. "Results were exacerbated by a highly promotional retail environment, which intensified over the course of July," said CEO Robert Hanson in a statement.
